~ A Parent-and-Child Photography Exhibition
by Bruce Osborn ~

During the ceremony event.

On Friday, 19th February 2016 we had the pleasure to host a commemorative event to mark the 5th year of the 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The showcase entitled, ‘OYAKO: PRESENT TO THE FUTURE, a parent-and-child photography exhibition’ is created by professional photographer Bruce Osborn.

Bruce Osborn, born and raised in Los Angeles is an esteemed photographer who holds a BA in Studio Art from the University of the Pacific and pursued photography at the Art Center College of Design. In 1980, his first photography exhibition received overwhelming responses, which resulted in him and his wife Yoshiko relocating to Tokyo and his works printed in well known publications in both Japan and overseas. Moreover, his works were exhibited in 21 Century Museum of Contemporary Art (Kanazawa), The Children's Museum (Boston), and Yamanashi Art Museum (Kofu City).

Two years since, Bruce created a parent and child photo series entitled Oyako (Japanese for parent and child). During that period, he received a magazine assignment to photograph Punk Rock musicians and at the same time he was to become a father. In soon hit the photographer to capture the differences in lifestyle and fashion of family generations. Attaining further success on his new and refreshing subject, Bruce travelled to Fukushima to capture the family generations that live on after the 3.11 tragedy.

The opening ceremony of the Oyako exhibition began with a welcome speech by JCC Director Ms Misako Ito, followed by an inspirational speech by Bruce who reminded everyone to count their blessings. The speech uplifted all guests present and when they were asked about their impressions on the tragedy, they responded, “The Japanese people are brave, strong and willful”, “Unfortunate natural disaster, but the Japanese residents persevered over it!”

Be sure to visit JCC as the Oyako exhibition will run till Saturday, 12th March 2016.
